Peak District Wildlife

    • Male Adder basking, Peak District National Park. One of my favourite projects in early spring is to see how the local population of Adders are doing. Despite the nationwide decline, the Peak District remains a firm stronghold for the UK's only venomous snake. This male was happily basking on the the dead bracken.

    • One of my favourite projects in early spring is to see how the local population of Adders are doing. Despite the nationwide decline, the Peak District remains a firm stronghold for the UK's only venomous snake. Adders can be tricky to accurately survey for, being such secretive animals. This means that it is very hard to get an accurate population estimate. These two males were basking together in an open patch near the hibernacula so I took the opportunity to take this abstract image of the two snakes twining together.

    • A Robin (Erithacus rubecula) photographed in the snow at Over Owler Tor in the Peak District National Park. After photographing the sunrise I was on my way back to the car when this friendly little robin started following me, as I sat down to get some pictures he hopped up onto my boot and looked right up at me. Thankfully I had some seeds in my pocket so I put a few out on the ground and photographed him as he hungrily pecked up the seeds. Winter can be a very hard time for our garden birds so do remember to keep you feeders topped up.

    • A Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) photographed on a nearby lake at sunset, Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. Tufties often get overlooked as a photographic subject in favour of more colourful or rare water birds. However I have always found them to be very photogenic with their distinctive crests, striking black and white feathers and bright yellow eyes.
