  • Sunset Griffon Vultures. Three Griffon vultures silhouetted against the setting sun while one takes flight against a bright orange sky. Jorbeer vulture sanctuary, Rajasthan, India. Jorbeer is a government-approved carcass dumping ground where farmers can bring dead cattle. This cow graveyard makes for macabre views and an overpowering stench (not the most pleasant location I’ve visited!) but attracts an astounding variety of raptors, including seven species of vulture!

  • Long-tailed shrike perched on a scarecrow in farmland. Uttar Pradesh, India.  About the Long-tailed shrike: The long-tailed shrike or rufous backed shirke (Lanius schach) is a predatory bird in the family Laniidae. Like other shrikes they favour dry open habitats where they hunt from prominent perches on trees, scrub and electrical wires. Long-tailed shrikes take a wide variety of animal prey, including insects, reptiles, birds, small mammals and even occasionally fish. Shrikes are well known for their habit of impaling their prey on thorns after earning them the nickname "butcher bird".
