Moorland

    • Some fantastic wintry conditions at the Wheel stones on Derwent Edge in the Peak District National Park. The Wheel Stones (otherwise known as the Coach and Horses) sit high up behind Derwent Edge overlooking the busy A57 Snake Pass. These strange gritstone formations have been shaped by the elements battering the Derwent Moors over many years. I've visited this location many times over the years, never quite getting the right conditions. On this occasion hoar frost, snow, low cloud and some sublime light combined for a spectacular Winter wonderland.

    • A Robin (Erithacus rubecula) photographed in the snow at Over Owler Tor in the Peak District National Park. After photographing the sunrise I was on my way back to the car when this friendly little robin started following me, as I sat down to get some pictures he hopped up onto my boot and looked right up at me. Thankfully I had some seeds in my pocket so I put a few out on the ground and photographed him as he hungrily pecked up the seeds. Winter can be a very hard time for our garden birds so do remember to keep you feeders topped up.

    • An adult lapwing stands proudly in an arable field below a craggy gritstone edge. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. Lapwings are the most widespread of our native waders, however sadly this stunning bird has seen a dramatic population decrease and is now a RSPB red list species.

    • A tiny lapwing chick by a roadside verge, look at the size of the clover for scale! Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. Whilst driving through the Peak District one afternoon I spotted these young lapwings huddled together in the road. As a rule I don't normally interfere with wildlife, but after watching them for some time it was clear they confused and in no hurry to get off the road. After nearly getting crushed for the second time, I realised I had no choice but to intervene and carefully picked them up out of harms way and placed them in a neighbouring field, close to where mum was hiding in the long grass.
