Trumpet gentian

Trumpet gentian, Tyrol, Austria. This abstract close up of the inside of a striking blue trumpet gentian flower was taken during a fantastic week in the Austrian Alps photographing the amazing range of plants and insects in the Alpine meadows. I won the trip as part of my award in the British Wildlife Photography Awards a while back and the tour focused primarily on macro photography.

About the Trumpet Gentian:

Trumpet gentians (Gentiana acaulis) are a striking blue and yellow trumpet shaped flower found in European Alpine habitats at elevations of 800–3,000 m (2,625–9,843 ft).

Otherwise known as the stemless gentian these Alpine specialists belong to the family Gentianaceae. Gentians typically bloom in the Spring but can re blossom throughout the summer and into Autumn.
