Buzzard Portrait

A common buzzard staring straight down the lens. Derbyshire, UK. After an incredibly early start I got to the hide in darkness and settled in the hide ready for the birds to come in. As food is only provided sporadically, ensuring the buzzards don’t become dependent, the birds were very much wild and visits were few and far between. Nevertheless it was a great experience watching this distinctive raptor swoop down and tear into the roadkill, unaware of us aside from the strange clicking sound coming from the wooden box!

About the Common Buzzard:

The Common Buzzard, true to its name, is now the most common and widespread of all UK birds of prey. Adult birds are mostly solitary, frequently seen perched on a tree or post, or circling high overhead scanning the ground for prey. Although their diet mainly consists of small mammals, they will also prey opportunistically on birds, invertebrates, reptiles and even carrion.
