  • Gray Hen (female black grouse) portrait taken at the Lek, Cairngorms National Park. The lek is one of the most incredible wildlife experiences I have ever witnessed, the sounds through the dark are out of this world!

  • Leaping Black Grouse at the Lek, Cairngorms National Park. These little flutter jumps are a major part of the action at the lek and a behaviour I was eager to capture.

  • Barnacle Goose resting, Outskirts of the Peak District National Park. Barnacle Geese are typically found around coastal regions of the UK, migrating here to escape the harsh conditions in the arctic regions of Europe and Russia. However an inland lake that I often visit for waterfowl has enticed a healthy population of these pretty geese. This image was taken during a heatwave where even the waterbirds were feeling the heat, panting and flattening out their bodies in the shade.

  • Male red grouse in falling snow, Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. Taken during my long term red grouse project where I spent several months photographing red grouse as they warmed up to the breeding season. Grouse are often very flighty and nervous, but after  spending so much time with the same birds some of the grouse got so used to my presence they ignored me and got on with their day allowing me to capture much more natural behaviour.

  • Red Grouse Habitat, Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. This image was taken with a 16-35mm wide angle lens to show the grouse in his snowy habitat. This image was taken as part of an ongoing long term red grouse project. Grouse are often very flighty and nervous, but after spending so much time with the same birds, many of the grouse have become so relaxed that I am able to capture more natural behaviours and a range of unusual images.

  • Male Ptarmigan with the evening sunshine lighting up the cliff face behind. Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. Another member of the grouse family, many people choose not to photograph ptarmigan during the Spring, but I think they look fantastic in their patchwork plumage!  As I hadn't photographed them before, I wasn't entirely sure where to go. But after some research on typical habitat, I began the two-hour hike into the mountains to begin my search. After a fruitless couple of hours, I eventually heard the distinctive croaking calls high up on the mountain side. Ptarmigan are amazingly well camouflaged in their habitat, so although I could hear them, I couldn't see any birds at all! All I could do was sit and wait for one to show itself, and show they did!  In flight the white wings stand out like a sore thumb against the dusty red rock and I carefully manoeuvred through the boulder field towards where it had landed. Although initially they were very wary of me, I was amazed at how confiding they were when approached with proper fieldcraft and I was able to get within a couple of metres of several individuals. This striking male was very feisty, displaying and chasing off any competitors hoping for a chance with his lady, hidden away in the rocks.
