  • Peak District Mountain Hare Habitat. A mountain hare sheltering from the biting wind under a peat grough with patchy snow. Conditions like these are the most difficult for spotting hares, every patch of snow could potentially be a hare. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park.

  • Mountain Hare Portrait. Although Mountain hares are renowned for their shy nature, their latin name 'Lepus Timidus' actually translates to timid hare, the key is finding a confiding individual. After many years photographing the Peak District hares I have learnt where to find particularly obliging hares that allow an incredibly close approach. It's always a pleasure spending a couple of hours just sitting with a hare, building trust and watching as they stretch and groom just a few feet away. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park.

  • Feeding mountain hare. Mountain hare feasting on the fresh grass shoots on a high moorland plateau. Here I used the low vegetation in front of me to frame the hare, contrasting the cold whites of the hare’s fur and the warm browns of the heather. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park.

  • Grumpy mountain hare. This Mountain hare continually pestered one female until she'd had enough and gave him a good crack before he turned round grumpily to look at the camera! Poor guy! Here I used the low vegetation in front of me to frame the hare, contrasting the cold whites of the hare’s fur and the warm browns of the heather. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park.
