Birds

    • Sheffield Waxwing. The waxwing, a colourful winter visitor to the UK. These stunning birds come to the UK to feast on the berry crop when there is a shortage of food for them at home. This only happens periodically and when large numbers of them appear it's known as an irruption. This is one of around 30 waxwings I photographed in 2019 next to the busy Ecclesall road in my home city of Sheffield. Although they had been around for a couple of weeks I waited until the tree tops were bare so that I could photograph them against the colours of the brickwork on the lower branches.

This only happens periodically and when large numbers of them appear it's known as an irruption. This pair of Waxwings were enjoying the berry crop on a busy urban street in my home city of Sheffield. It was a real pleasure to be able to see these stunning birds so close to home, next to the busy Ecclesall road in my home city of Sheffield. Although they had been around for a couple of weeks I waited until the tree tops were bare so that I could photograph them against the colours of the brickwork on the lower branches.

    • Sanderling at dawn taken during a recent trip to the Lincolnshire coast. After a treacherous walk across the salt marshes in the pitch black, I arrived at the shore well before sunrise and set up to wait for the tide to change. After what felt like an age the sun finally started to rise and a group of sanderlings and dunlins scuttled across the sand in front of me, plucking crustaceans out of the surf . This Sanderling paused briefly, allowing a series of portraits in the blue dawn half light.

    • Baby blue tit. Whilst up in Northumberland we spent some time photographing a range of woodland birds. Our birds are under a lot of pressure during the spring and summer, providing for their demanding young. This blue tits overworked parent was looking pretty scruffy to say the least!

    • Pied Wagtails Courting. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. I was capturing some close up portraits of the female wagtail surrounded daisies when suddenly the male arrived and began a courtship display, I quickly slithered back so I could fit them both in the frame and capture the action.
