Peak District

    • A tiny lapwing chick calling softly for mum. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park. Whilst driving through the Peak District one afternoon I spotted these young lapwings huddled together in the road. As a rule I don't normally interfere with wildlife, but after watching them for some time it was clear they confused and in no hurry to get off the road. After nearly getting crushed for the second time, I realised I had no choice but to intervene and carefully picked them up out of harms way and placed them in a neighbouring field, close to where mum was hiding in the long grass.

    • Badger cub Portrait. Derbyshire, Peak District NP. As cubs get older they tend to become more nocturnal but in late Spring and early Summer they’re still typically the first to emerge from the sett. This is often around 6-7pm which is ideal for photography as there’s still plenty of sunlight! Despite being incredibly shy and elusive, badgers are one of my favourite British species to photograph.

    • Backlit Badger. An adult European badger in long grass backlit by golden evening light. By the end of this season the grasses surrounding the sett were the tallest I've ever seen, sometimes making it tricky to get a clear view. However when the badgers raised their heads high enough, the seed heads caught the light beautifully, adding additional texture and colour. Derbyshire, Peak District National Park.
