Peak District Wildlife

    • Common frog on mossy bank. I spotted this frog crossing a busy logging track, so I picked it up out of harms away and placed it on the mossy edge of the spawning pool. It sat happily for some time, allowing me to capture a few images before it hopped into the water. Derbyshire, Peak District NP.

    • Common Toad Mating Embrace. Male toads often hitch a ride to the breeding pools on the backs of the much larger females. Whilst it may seem lazy, only around 1 in 5 males manage to breed, so this technique ensures the male has the best chance of mating with his chosen female. Derbyshire Peak District National Park.

    • Viviparous Lizard basking in some late afternoon sunshine the Peak District. With no sense of scale these look a lot like fearsome Komodo dragons but are in fact only 10-15cm long!

    • Male Adder, Peak District National Park. One of my favourite projects in early spring is to see how the local population of Adders are doing. Despite the nationwide decline, the Peak District remains a firm stronghold for the UK's only venomous snake. This stunning male was basking in some low vegetation by the path so I used my long lens to capture some abstract compositions.

    • Female Adder, Peak District National Park. One of my favourite projects in early spring is to see how the local population of Adders are doing. Despite the nationwide decline, the Peak District remains a firm stronghold for the UK's only venomous snake. This female was slithering through the vegetation on the hunt so I got down low and photographed her as she moved through the bracken.

Despite the nationwide decline, the Peak District remains a firm stronghold for the UK's only venomous snake. This male was happily basking on the the dead bracken.
