Peak District Wildlife

    • Spring Mountain Hare. A patchy Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) sheltering in its form. Peak District National Park. I like to photograph the hares right after the snow melt while they're still in their white winter coats before they change back to summer browns and disappear into the landscape once again.

    • Curlew in typical moorland habitat. Eastern Moors, Derbyshire - Peak District Wildlife Photography. Moorland Curlew, Derbyshire, Peak District National Park, UK. The curlew is one of the most distinctive and recognisable moorland birds. Hearing their evocative call is a true sign that summer has arrived on the high pastures. For this image I used a slightly larger depth of field to ensure the summer grasses and bilberry were in focus, including some habitat.

    • Male sparrowhawk tearing into a fresh kill, Peak District National Park. I was driving down a quiet country lane when I saw the sparrowhawk standing over a fresh kill, this large wood pigeon. I slowly rolled closer and painstakingly edged the car door open. Inching out of the drivers seat, I crawled to lie underneath using the door as cover. Not bothered by me at all he continued to tuck in and I was able to photograph it for 20 minutes before another car came along and I had to back away to let them pass. One of the most amazing wildlife experiences I have had to date and something I wouldn't have seen if I hadn't chosen to take that route!
