Red Squirrel reflection – About the Red Squirrel

Red squirrels were once the only squirrels in the UK, but sadly due to the introduction of the much larger American greys our native population has been almost completely displaced. Thankfully there are still a few isolated strongholds in the UK and in an exciting new development they are actually starting to make a steady comeback helped by the resurgence of the pine marten.

Red squirrels are one of Britain’s most iconic and lovable mammals; fiery-furred, small, speedy, and seriously adorable. With their tufted ears and fluffy tails, these woodland wonders once ruled the treetops across the UK.

So, What Happened to Red Squirrels?

Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) have been around for thousands of years, but their numbers have dropped dramatically. Why? Enter the grey squirrel — their bigger, bolder American cousin. Greys arrived in the 1800s and quickly muscled in on red turf. They eat more, breed faster, and carry a virus (squirrelpox) that’s harmless to them but deadly to reds.

Today, red squirrels are mostly found in parts of Scotland, Northern England, Northern Ireland, and a few select spots in Wales and the Isle of Wight.

Fighting for the Reds

Luckily, the UK has rallied around its red-furred friends. Wildlife groups like the Red Squirrel Survival Trust and local conservation teams are working to protect and restore red squirrel habitats. This includes:

  • Creating “red squirrel zones” where greys are managed.

  • Planting and protecting red-friendly woodlands.

  • Educating the public (like you!) about how to help.

And guess what? It’s working! Populations are bouncing back in places like the Scottish Highlands and Northumberland.

How You Can Help (Even If You’re Not in the Woods)

Want to be a red squirrel hero? Here’s how:

  • Donate to red squirrel charities.

  • Report grey squirrel sightings to local wildlife groups.

  • Volunteer for local projects if you live near a red zone.

  • Share the love on social media — the more people who care, the better!

Why They Matter

Red squirrels aren’t just cute — they’re a crucial part of the UK’s woodland ecosystem and a symbol of our natural heritage. By protecting them, we’re helping preserve the wild beauty of Britain.
