Grey Plover 2

Grey plover standing in the surf on the Lincolnshire mud flats. Whilst out photographing grey seals over the winter months I spent some time on the mud flats photographing waders. By lying completely still and flat on the sand the birds eventually got used to me and began to hunt for grubs just a few metres away. This Grey Plover seemed completely oblivious to me, passing within touching distance. Grey plovers breed in the artic regions during spring and summer, reaching our shores in time for winter with numbers peaking in Autumn.

About the grey plover:

The grey plover is a large plover only found along the coast in sandy or muddy estuaries. Grey plovers arrive in the UK from mid  July, with numbers peaking in autumn. A very small number of birds do stay here year round however it is widely considered to be a winter migrant.
